First mention of Sophronia’s difficult relationship with her mother, on the second day.

It looks like she wrote in the dollar amount, but thought better of it and scratched it out.

One of my images from the whole diary.

She just said that she didn’t see Albert Lamb, so this must be a different Albert. Albert Lumbard (Nelson’s son) was 17 at the time and lived with Nelson in Sturbridge.

There are a few William Culvers in the town at the time. Hard to be sure.

Sophronia is working out some math in the margins.

Another beautiful image

I have looked and looked for a Winthrop family that makes sense and I just can’t find one! The Winthrops were one of the first colonizing families of the town, so they have a long history.

There was a John Buckingham, born about 1817, that was a Clergyman in 1865.

I wish I knew who their teacher was! She never uses her name, just calls her Teacher.

*I’m not sure what this word is. Perhaps it is a game that we no longer recognize.

I have looked at these lines over and over and am not sure what they are. Obviously, it totally looks like something a 13 year old girl would write in her diary, but I’m not sure what the letters mean. Particularly, the “Y” and “+”… the Y could be an L and the + could be a capitol A.

Lo A L from SL? Like her initials?

There are some Charles Condons, or similar, in the area, but none that totally fit and none that I can definitively place in Sturbridge in 1866 (from the 1865 census, for example).

I swear this word looks like “team”

There was an Ida Lincoln whose father, Henry Lincoln, worked in the Cotton Mill in Sturbridge at the time.

I really don’t know what these letters mean

There was a Fanny Green whose father, James Green, was a Stage Driver in Sturbridge at the time.

She often returns to the schoolhouse, stays late to clean it, or is one of the only students at school. She clearly loves it.

She likes to work at home and at school.

One of the only times that she complains about anything, and about working specifically. She also complains once about having to read her bible :)

Gosh, religion is dark. She goes to church most Sundays, goes to services in other towns as well, and reads her Bible on Sundays. Sundays are often days for visiting others too. I'm not sure what her religion would have been and there were a few in town- Baptists, Quakers, Methodists, and Universalists.

She does the evening farm chores alone.

There are lots of women with the last name Buffington in Sturbridge at the time, but not any men that might fit this description that I can find. He must not be from Sturbridge. There are some male Buffingtons in Brimfield, but without more detail, it is hard to be sure

Too many Shaws to be sure.

There was a Samuel Addison Shumway. Maybe they called him Addison to distinguish him from the other Samuel Shumway in town (Abijah's brother, (1786-1864))

Don’t know what to make of this… the writing is in big letters that isn’t typical of her and she clearly wrote of the first entry for the day. Probably just being a silly teenager.

I find this entry to be really interesting. As stated, she is very hard working and enjoys working, but this is the first time that she directly says that she would like to be earning a wage for herself. Also, she pairs this sentiment with the difficult relationship that she has with her mother.

Spending lots of time with Albert!

From my research, I see that this is Sophronia’s birthday, but she doesn’t mention it.

This connects to her June 4th entry. I think that this is the Webber family, who live in Holland.

Her phrasing of this is interesting… Nathaniel and Betsey were living with Sophronia and her parents, so it seems strange that she would make note of this, unless she is saying the Betsey is now taking over the keeping of the house in general and relieving Fannie. It would only be a few years later in 1870 that Betsey, Nathaniel, Enos, and Erving would be living away from the Lumbards in Brimfield, though.

Freeman Alvin Webber

Confirmed in the history that this is his birthday!

Without more information, it is hard to be sure. There was a Charlotte Stowe in the county in 1865. She was listed as 19 in that year, and was the daughter of Charlotte, and sister of Martin and Freddie. There was also a Susan Stone, whose married name became Philips in 1865, but they weren’t married until August. I’m not sure.

Scaffold? Sounds like her parents are occupied and she is on her own, so she writes in her diary. Someone to keep her company?

Not sure about Alviry Williams… there were a few women in the area at the time with were kinds similar, but none that jump out. Some were older than Sophronia, or lived kinda far away, or weren’t married.

Oh no! Both George and Albert guessed that it was Sophronia that gave them their May baskets. Not only was this supposed to stay secret, but she gave out two!

I’m not sure who Major Lumbard is. Of all Aurea’s brothers and uncles, no one that I can find died on 1866 or is referred to as “Major.” The Lumbard family is large, though, so it is very easy to miss someone in another branch of the family.

It’s the beginning of the summer and planting has started! Freeman seems to be a farm hand that comes to help them on the farm. Also, another example of how industrious Sophronia is.

There was an Emma Blodget both born in 1866, so this makes sense if she was baptized on this day.

Another bad day with her mother… Sophronia never seems angry or frustrated at her. Mainly, she just seems sad.

She is a happy girl!

Strange, I can’t find these people. Neither Aurea or Fannie had siblings named Clara or Gilford. Sophronia did have a cousin named Clara, so perhaps it is a family name for a great aunt that I just haven’t found or something.

I can’t find a Benjamin Winthrop in Sturbridge in 1866! Those Winthrops…

I think she is saying that she hid and scared Freeman as he was walking through the woods, lol.

Sounds like Sophronia got caught gossiping!

Eliza Brown (1842-1897) was the daughter of Jasper (1805-1886) and Augusta (Lumbard (1809-1894). Augusta was Aurea’s sister and they lived in Oxford, Mass.

Previously described Uncle Hiram- Aunt Sophronia’s husband. Hiram Upham (1803-1869) was Aurea’s uncle- his father William’s brother.

SO MANY Shumways that it could be! I would love to know more about her teachers.

John Draper was born about 1855 in Sturbridge. His father, John, was a lumber dealer.

No idea… might be a game? It just looks like random letters put together

Written in pen, unlike the rest of the diary, which is written in pencil

There is also a little drawing next to this. I think she was counting hens and eggs

Written in pencil off to the side

Counting hens and eggs

There is a spot at the end of the diary to record expenses, and she wrote this there
