Inside cover

Maude always starts her entries by writing the city she is in.

Leonidas Johnson (1893-1965). Find more information on the People page.

Maude and Lon are dating! That information does not show up in any of the news stories about them.

Marx Cheney (1891-1970)- Maude’s brother and the Company’s manager

I think that Maude calls her sister-in-law, Lenora Cheney (maidan name, Shinn), “Shinny”

Their sister, Pauline (1887-1978), is a practicing chiropractor in Chicago.

Maude calls Lon “Old Tut”

Maude calls their sibling group “The Kids”

She’s staying with him in a suite! Seems scandalous for 1923.

While she is home, she doesn’t write detailed entries. She writes long notes over whole pages.

Louise Conner (Cheney, 1884-1950)

Lon is from Paola, KS. These must be his parents.

Lenora’s parents

Queen Elizabeth’s birthday is April 21st?

“Ptomaine poisoning” is just food poisoning.

Maude and Lon had a fight. She says they made up, but her entries get shorter after this, and then nonexistent. It really seems to have changed her high spirits.

Now, she mainly only writes the city they are in.

Whole second half of the diary is blank.

This must have been written by Marx, Lenora, Lon, or someone else in their Company. They were in Lloydminster, Alberta, on June 26th. “Farewell to Cucullain” is a violin tune.

From here on, there are just a series of names and addresses. I usually don’t include these in my transcripts, but I think it is interesting to see all the people she knew.
